The Second Coming

I swear this is the last of my WTA rants, as I plan to go on a soul-searching journey for WTA love during the clay season. Oh yeth…  but the girls aren’t making it any easier for me to feel the love. Safina, Zvonareva, JJ and Ivanovic all out by Round 32,  honestly, HONESTLY!

Mind you, all of them lost to the floaters of the tour. The likes of Dulko, Stosur (YAY!), Szavay and Li are dangerous players in their own right. At the end of the day, for a professional tour, the elites of the game will suffer upsets from time to time, but (and this is a big but), they’re not meant to be this upsettable. The only person who I would cut some slack for is probably Vera, who has posted solid results this year, the rest can all hang their heads in shame, go to Borders and buy themselves a stack of self-help books. In the immortal words of WB Yeats, “the best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity”. It is a pathetic state of affairs when the likes of Agniewska Randwanska or Zheng Jie are more dependable to play to their potentials or beyond than some of the top seeds on the women’s tour.

  1. So currently 11 on WTA tour Agnieszka Radwanska is not elite type of players? IMO it is only the matter of time, before she returns to the top 10 and beyond and will start winning matches with “elite” players again! So people think than Cibulkova, Cornet, Szavay, Wozniacki, Azarenka, Pavlyuchenkova, Petrova, Zvonareva, Dementieva games are suited for top 10, but not Aga’s! It will be interesting to see how she is going to suprise a lot more people with her capabilities!

  2. Hi Beata and welcome :)

Don’t get me wrong. What I meant by the “elite” are the grand slam/major title contenders. I quite like Radwanska, but I’ve never considered her to be a contender to actually win a slam at some point in her career. Quarterfinals, semifinals? Yes. Or if by some surprisng state of affairs, she did win a slam, I don’t expect her to be continuously in grand slam contention. As for being in the top 10, yes I agree with you, if Cornet or Szavay is perceived as being legit Top-10ers (past/present/future), then Aga deserves to be up there too. But I would never call those two “elite” either. As for Wozniacki and Azarenka – I see grand slams in them, whether or not they do actually live up to their potential is a different matter.
