Baby Fed: “I don’t know if anyone will ever dominate as Pete did”

Someone directed me to this video on twitter, it comes from February 2001, even before Federer defeated Sampras at Wimbledon.

I just cracked up watching it. With the benefit of hindsight, where do I start? The complexion?

On the growing attention paid to him

“Now I am starting to get known in Switzerland, it’s nice. I hope I can keep it going, and I’m going to get a bit bigger, try to follow Martina, maybe, if possible.”

Watch out for 9:00 …

Note also his answer to “is it getting harder for one player to dominate?”

And his five year plan? “My dream is always to get No 1 in the world.”

When did he think he was going to win his first slam? “Two or three years.”

Dootsie is mightily spooked. The Fed channeling Dementieva in his clairvoyance. Or maybe he’s just one huge “go-getter”. Woah …

  1. Lol he’s proud of a 10 match winning streak … I want to squish him!

His skin actually looks quite terrible. You can see little red pimples all over his face! Boy have they cleared up …

Also am amused by how he talks like he’ll only win ONE grand slam.

  2. Can you imagine him hanging out with Anna Wintour when you watch this video?

And that people compared him to Anna Kournikova?

What a cutie! He has such a sweet smile!

  3. lol he’s so cute! It’s like in the movies when they make actors look older or younger, I’m watching this and I’m like “He looks just the same only they want him to look younger!” haha.

What do you think? Has he “started a little boom” for Swiss tennis? lol

Can you believe I have friends who can’t understand why we think that he’s a cutie??

I like how he says that he chose tennis because he knew his result would be in his (very capable) hands.

He also hadn’t developed his “you know” verbal tic yet lol. I like the tone of his voice better now.

Great vid, thanks for sharing :-)

  4. Awesome video, I was grinning from start to end. It is spooky, isn’t it? He’s achieved everything he’s stated and so much more. In the end when asked about his GS chances, he says, “I really hope mine will be in Wimbeldon or US Open, once.” Once? How about five times each, in a row? 8O

He said some things pre AO which turned out to be pretty accurate. I can’t remember what it was now, but I recall how it turned out just like that. Even before RG he said, “May be one day Nadal won’t be there to defend…I’ll always keep believing in my chances to win the French” or something like that.

  5. Awwww, baby Fed. He’s so tiny! He hadn’t even been with Mirka for a year! Awwwwwwwww…

“I want to reach the quarters or the semis of a grand slam… maybe Wimbledon.” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. How little you know, baby Roger, how little you know.

  6. Hi all,
Yup, hindsight’s a bitch. Slicey, Federer’s “only” on a twelve match winning streak right now. 10 match streak is pretty damn good for anyone.

Liz – I can imagine Anna Wintour wanting to wipe this from her memory. But Fed’s a reformed man now – he uses skin care and hair care products, wears cardigans, and goes to NY fashion week. No need for Queer Eye intervention.

Nicole – good pick up on the tone of his voice, man Federer used to sound so NASAL.

Blue – let’s hope Federer’s predicting himself to win Wimbledon right now. He’s pretty right with these things. I’m just scared at the fact that he was aiming for No 1 in the next five years. 2001 + 5 = 2006. Nuff said.

Jodi – SQUEE you fangirl :P :P been meaning to say this – nice to tweet at the same time as you during Roland Garros. At least someone appreciates the time diff. Twas crrrrrazy.

  7. Federer is truly the greatest tennis player to have ever played. Laver won at a different era where most tournaments were played mostly on grass. Sampras couldn’t win it on clay.

    bravo Fed!
