We cried for ARod, laughed at Pete's sunnies, hyped up Toothface, fumed over Jacketgate, and raged about sexism. But it was Roger's historic 15 that stole the show.

It is extremely extremely sad and a really pathetic move to criticize a true sportsman. Federer should “exhibit” his accomplishments. He has worked hard enough for the position of the Greatest Player of All Time. Without amazing sportsman like these, people like these writers would not have anything to criticize and write about. They would be out of jobs. This writer should be thanking his lucky stars that sportsmen like this work their ass off, practicing day in day out, give up their personal lives just so they could wear a jacket that jobless, lazy-ass writers like this could write about it. And as for the speech, I think that any player who has accomplished something as impossible and impressive as what Federer just achieved would be a little tongue tied and nervous in front of some of his childhood idols, a million more fans and his friends and family after winning the greatest trophy of all time. And if I recall correctly, Roddick wasn’t very grateful either. So is it an excuse for the loser to be ungrateful? These people should just lay off Federer and learn some tennis so that they could write something that really means something. Not just waste a lot of time writing about a piece of garment.
I agree so much! If I were Roger *which I am not, but let’s make a wild assumption* I would not mind wearing the 15-slam-jacket? Why the heck not, if I did it, if I achieved something no-one has ever achieved before. After all, those hockey players also prepare those “THE-WORLD-CHAMPIONS” Caps in advance, and no-one makes such a fuss about it.
I think when Michael Schumaker won his 7th championship, he
got a cap with 7 on it. I don’t care for the jacket, love it, hate
it, there’s no reason to attack the player for it. Especially since
Federer didn’t know about it. It was a surprise on Nike. If you
watched the replay, you’ll see someone running on to hand it
to him. Nike would be crazy if it didn’t expect Federer to
make history that day. The whole deal has nothing to do with
Fed respecting Roddick.
Although this article was far more vitriolic than my posting on my forum the other day, I can’t help but feel that it needs to be mentioned. Some of things that were said and done didn’t need to be. It could have been handled ever so slightly differently and it all would have looked SO much better. It was in quite stark contrast to the humble Roger we have come to know and love. OK, a lot of the ‘all credit to the opposition’ has gone, quite rightly so IMO, I also think the crowd felt it a bit pretentious. The jacket did rather take the biscuit. Imagine if Rafa wore a jacket last year saying something like “I kicked his ass at Wimby as well!!”…
You’ll find that The Mirror is deffo up there with The Sun as one of the main trash tabloids in the UK. It seemed a bit sensationalist, especially after mentioning what Fed has said about Muzza in the past. Maybe this is laying the foundations to drum up more Murray support in time for the year-ending Masters Cup in London…?
Well, 2Hander – Kicking Roger’s ass at Wimby and winning the first-ever 15th Slam is not the same, no? *lol* And I have always been sure that Roger is not as humble as he is often portrayed)
Hey 2hander – agree and disagree. Do I think it’s the most sensitive thing that Nike and Roger could’ve done? No.
Do I think Roger was being an arrogant asshole? No.
Do I want to shove a pen up Oliver Holt’s nose? hmmm…
What all these writers failed to note was that Federer admitted himself the jacket was a surprise from Nike, and why not celebrate the achievement? It’s still mind-boggling when I think about his records and numbers. I think the problem was that everyone felt terrible ARod, and didn’t need to be reminded of the lucky bastard across the net that remains to this day – the only person that stands between Roddick and a second grand slam.
But really do we seriously expect Nike not to make sure that everyone on this planet knows Mr 15 Slams is sponsored by them? I personally don’t mind the jacket, but like you said, it could’ve been handled a lot better, though it’s quite low for the Mirror to slander Fed because of it.
As for Rafa, I don’t know about an “I kicked his ass at Wimbly” jacket, Nike tends to make special clothes when there’s something historical to be commemorated, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a “5 Roland Garros in a row” jacket that got destroyed after Rafa lost to Soderling.
Toilet seat covers lol. You’re being nice doots. Actually the jacket was a surprise for Roger, I saw it being handed to him by someone after the match. I wonder if the writer saw ‘arrogant’ Roger joining in with crowd’s standing ovation for Andy. The worst part is seeing some fans agreeing with this article. Honestly the guy has just made history and they are picking on his clothes.
I found nothing wrong in his comments to Andy, I really think he understood the pain. Losing to the same guy so often, to come so close only to lose in the end and to be denied something you’ve been chasing after for so long – I’d say Fed knew exactly how it felt.
Does anyone have the link where it says Fed was surprised by the jacket?
My opinion is that Fed has earned those 15 and I don’t for a second think he’s being arrogant. He stood up with the audience for the standing ovation. And no there was nothing wrong with his speech either. You could tell he was waffling a lot saying “unbeeeeliiieeeeeevable” like 18728979 times and what he said to Andy came from the heart. Whatever Fed would have said that day would have hurt because of how close Andy was to winning it.
Some critics and haters just can’t find anything wrong with his accomplishments so they turn to his attire. I can take that as a fan but it’s still pathetic.
As a matter of fact, yes:

Fastforward to the end.
Thanks a lot.
Love, love, love your blog btw. You’ve got a great sense of humour.
Welcome, and cheers!
thumbs up, Julia)))
Oh and about the Mirror, they are as tabloid as it frigging gets. They’re probably still bitter about Muzza’s loss.
OK, the veritable can of worms is very much open (perhaps by me! YIKES!!)…
Look, I am a big fan of Federer. I love what he has done for the game and his personality etc. I am also neither a fan of the RF branding which . Mind you, in their day, Adidas did give Lendl and Edberg their own branding…and Puma to Becker. So maybe it’s not so bad. Maybe Rafa et al can have their own branding too…
Also, come to think of it, when Rafa was asked about his pirate outfit a couple of years ago, he said they wear pretty much what NikĀ£ tell them to…though there is some element of choice.
Heheehee 2Hander, not to worry, you’re not responsible for opening the can of worms, it had already been opened by many tabloids.
I do get what you’re saying with not being a fan of Nike’s branding. I haven’t been a fan of Nike marketing myself. It’s more a matter of how each player is branded rather than the fact that they’re branded. I personally liked Rafa’s pirate image better than his pink sorbet French Open top.
