Quotable Quotes: next time someone says “Roger Federer will never win another slam”…

It might help to remind yourselves of this:

“So is Federer a future Wimbledon champion? Probably not unless he learns to vary his tactics. He has been brought up on clay and it showed, his trips to the net being about as frequent as a blue moon. Still if he only becomes the next Ivan Lendl (eight Grand Slams) he will be thanking his lucky stars.”

– Guy Hodgson writing in the Independent after Roger Federer had won the Wimbledon boy’s title in 1998.

Of course, I hardly blame Guy Hodgson for it. Who would’ve guessed back in 1998 that tennis would evolve to be a sport where trips to the net are indeed as frequent as a blue moon?

Even so, this “Federer as the next Ivan Lendl” thing just cracks me up in the most smug way.

Not to mention, I’ve always thought of Ivan Lendl as “sex on ice”. You didn’t need to know that.

I live for these kind of reminders 🙂 Thx

  2. FortuneCookie says :

And no Doots,no one needed to know about your Lendl love :p. Although Roger is kinda heading in same direction as him in number of daughters haha,Ivan has 5 right?

    • dootsiez says :

Didn’t Lendl mock someone’s umm manhood for fathering daughters? Karma’s a bitch, he went on to have 5 himself.

Lendl was my very first tennis crush! I

And here I thought I was the only one on the planet…

It’s that whole dark brooding thing. I cannot resist. It explains my other inexplicable tennis crush…Nenad Zimonjic. And of course, it’s a big part of my Fed love. Although you only see it on court with him. Off court he’s a disgustingly content, relaxed individual…

    • dootsiez says :

You’re not the only one, roadrunnerz.

I was just a toddler back in Lendl’s days, but he’s kinda got this dark, quirky hotness to him. Pity most people don’t appreciate it – they just cringe when I bring up his undercurrent of sex appeal. 😛

      • dootsiez says :

although, you’re alone on the Nenad Zimonjic thing. *shakes head*

        • roadrunnerz says :

LOL! Nenad is hotness I swear! I’ve never given him a second thought ’til I saw him practice in person in Montreal this year.

I remember being like, seven years old, and wanting Lendl to win Wimby sooo badly. Weird, I know. lol

        • dootsiez says :

I’ll check out Nenad next year at the AO. But I’m *highly* doubtful. HIGHLY.

Hehehe much like Safin, Lendl was never meant for Wimbledon. As he would say, “grass is for cows!” Gotta say I agree. 😉

  4. Julie says :

I’m going to say it first: that Hodgson dude is closely related to a certain Simon Reed. It is quite possible that Guy is Simon’s father. Stupidity is hereditary. Poor Simon’s mum thought she would spare her only son by giving him her own family name but it didn’t work!

    • dootsiez says :

Heh? I just googled Guy Hodgson, and apparently he’s head of the media department at the University of Chester.

British higher education not what it’s cracked up to be. 😛

      • FortuneCookie says :

Haha,Chester uni isn’t exactly up there with the top universities in Britain…
(ironically,I think media studies is apparently one of it’s strengths though :p?),No offence if you happen to have anyone from there reading this lol!

Sports abounds with these self anointed experts.Even last year you had people like Becker and Wilander predicting that Federer would never win a slam again. Why are people so quick to write off someone who just does not fit into the boundaries of ordinary mortals?.Even when Roger was struggling through the spring ,even in the darkest hours I ust told myself to wait for the slams. As long as he won his beloved Wimby I knew he would be ok.But then that is why we are fedfans or fed fanatics as some would say.

  6. Blue says :

I get immense satisfaction from reading and listening to these experts now. I can recall tons of ‘Roger is done! He won’t win again! He needs to see a shrink!’ quotes from last year alone. Sucks to be them huh? To be fair to Hodgson I don’t think anybody expected Fed to be this good, and he wrote this in 1998. Have you seen this one? http://bit.ly/5ZJTF

  7. breadstix says :

So this Federer guy turned out pretty okay, eh? I wonder how often people bring this up to Hodgson these days.

  8. Bryan says :

    Hindsight: what a b*tch!
