Frazzle Post: Countdown.

The last week before the Australian Open.

Overnight, Roger Federer has pulled out of the Kooyong Classic, sparking rumours that his wrist is bothering him more than he’s letting on. Fed’s manager dismissed the claims. Make of that what you will.

Meanwhile, here’s a pic I took last year. *sigh*

Nole and del Potro now headline the field in Kooyong, while Jo-Willy Tsonga‘s participation is a little uncertain given his injury.

It’s a bad week for France all-round. Over in Sydney, Monfils has pulled out of the tournament after being plagued by what appears to be a shoulder inflammation. Birdy, Hewitt, Stan and Samurai will still be there to hold up a less-than-stellar field.

Never mind, Sydney’s all about the girls. Serena, Safina, Sveta, CWoz and Vika will be getting their last minute practice before the Oz Open next week.

Somehow, it’s just not that exciting without the Belgians.

Over in the tennis wasteland of Hobart, Anabel Medina Garrigues and Shahar Peer are the top two seeds, but Zheng Jie, Lucie Safarova, Alize Cornet and Sori Cirstea should make things interesting.

Wow, you got pretty close to TMF!
I dunno, I think it’s a wise decision and I also heard he may be playing 1 exhibition match.

  2. pban says :

His participation at Kooyong was always iffy, I don’t think the organisers ever did confirm it. As for the arm /wrist whatever, if it is indeed sore it will take 5-6 days to recover as long as it is not something serious like a tear.I suppose he would have pulled out of the semis if it was something really serious.

    • FortuneCookie says :

Nope,he was never actually confirmed for Kooyong, tournament director just kept a slot for him till the very last minute!

Is there even a not so clear favourite for the men’s field? Would a Federer fan even say he has a 25% to take it all? 20%? I think it’s a no even though I’m assuming his wrist is okay.

There’s really 9-10 guys who could win AO 2010 and it wouldn’t be a big upset (at the bottom end I would put Cilic and maybe Verdasco and Tsonga).

    • dootsiez says :

I dunno about 9-10 guys. I personally can’t name more than 6 with a real shot (Fed, Rafa, Djoko, Muzz, del Potro. Randy/Davydenko).

Guys like Verdasco, Tsonga or Cilic may pull an upset, but colour me horrified if any of them go all the way. And this is coming from someone who likes all 3 of them.

As for Fed, he’s not a huge favourite this time, or even a clear favourite. But his chances are probably still a shade better on sheer record alone. 25% sounds about right.

It causes frazzles, but it makes interesting tennis.

Nooooooooooo apparently Nalby is out of Auckland with an abdominal injury *sob sob*
At least I may be able to work for my exmas now, with no Fed Rafa Nalby Sod Kim playing this week… 😥 Though Jo-Willy and Reeshie can still mess my planning up 😀

  5. Dippy says :

NO!!! Not 2008 all over again, what bad timing for Roger to strain his wrist. I hope he recovers in time

  6. Jack says :

Hopefully the wrist is ok and it’s just a precautionary thing.

I actually don’t like player playing the week before a Slam. I always think its a bit risky – they may get injured or play too much and be fatigued. So I’d prefer him to rest the week before a Slam rather than play.

    • dootsiez says :

True that. But Kooyong has been a routine for most of his career, and it’s not really a tournament. It’s more like a practice in front of crowds. 😦

  7. breadstix says :

    Roger! Please be healthy. 😦

  8. Jack says :

Did u know that if Djokovic wins the AO and Roger loses before the semi-final, Djokovic will become No 1!!!!

    Now thats a scary thought.

    • JFK says :

And I also read that if he makes it to the same round as Nadal at the AO he becomes #2.

      • FortuneCookie says :

      • dootsiez says :

I did read both of that: PLEASE. NOT. NOLE.

Dude made 2 quarters, a third round and a semi at slams last year and has a shot at No 1? Must be a weak era. 😉

      • pban says :

Please explain the maths of that ,Rafa won AO last year he is defending 2000 points and he is at present 1200 points behind so how does he get to be no. 1 by reaching the same round as Roger.Djoko does have a realistic chance though….omg guys “FRAZZLE”on the double, semifinal streak is under serious threat.:(

  9. pban says :

My mistake, its nole who gets to be #2, oh no!!! Rafa Fed buck up guys, worrying about Fed drives me mad ,I don’t want Rafa at 3 and frazzle about him as a possible semifinal opponent. Besides MAndy at 2 for 2 weeks was enough I want order in the tennis world.

  10. Jack says :

    Bad news doots!

Nalbandian has had to withdraw from the aussie open:

  11. Chairman, Federer Puny Left Arm Society says :

I want to inform you that the wrist on our bigger brother, the might arm, is recovering nicely. It should not be a problem for AO.

On the other hand, the forehand shanks are a problem. One other thing, the 6-2 final set score is a nightmare in waiting.
